Domain Name FAQ's

What is a domain name?

Why do I need a domain name?

A domain name is a name that identifies one or more IP addresses. For example, the domain name microsoft.com represents about a dozen IP addresses. Every domain name has a suffix that indicates what top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are a limited number of such domains which you may be familiar with. Examples of common TLD's:

.gov - Government Agencies
.edu - Educational Institutions
.org - Organizations (usually nonprofit)
.mil - Military
.com - Commercial Business
.net - Network Organizations
.ca - Canadian designation

Don't be fooled by the so-called "ultra cheap domain names". Always read the fine print to find out who actually owns the domain name. There have been reports that some have purchased domain names and developed them. If you then try to move the domain to another registrar, you find out you don't actually own the name, the "ultra cheap domain" company does. And they would be happy to sell it back to you for a hefty price.
